The Auxiliary Police Unit is comprised of dedicated volunteers who either live or work in the City of Birmingham.
Auxiliary officers receive 120 hours of instruction at the Oakland Police Academy Reserve Officer Training Program prior to appointment.
Auxiliaries assist regular officers during many special events held throughout the year and act as back up to the regular officers on patrol. Members of the Auxiliary Police are perhaps most visible in providing crowd and traffic control and security for high school sporting events.
In 2009 auxiliary officers spent 255 hours at range practice and training, 197 hours on road patrol, 313 hours at special events, 217 hours at school functions, and 30 hours in administration this year for a total of 1,012 hours of service.
