The Board of Zoning Appeals acts on questions arising from the administration of the zoning ordinance, including the interpretation of the zoning map. The board hears and decides appeals from and reviews any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the building official.
Please note that agendas for this board are usually posted the week prior to the meeting date. Meetings
The Board of Zoning Appeals hears appeals from the City's Zoning Ordinance. These appeals are typically variances for setback requirements. The Board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the City Commission Room of the Municipal Building. Some meetings are still following COVID-19 protocol, please call to verify if meeting restrictions are in place. To file an appeal, a completed application and the items from the Required Information Checklist must be submitted by the 12th of the month preceding the meeting. The Board's agenda is restricted to seven (7) appeals therefore, the first seven applications received will be heard at the meeting.
Regulations
The Zoning Ordinance regulates the size of lots as well as the placement of a residence on a lot. Typically, these restrictions regarding placement are referred to as setbacks, which means the distance a structure must be placed or setback from the lot line. The Ordinance also limits the amount of paved surface which is defined as concrete, blacktop, gravel, brick, or a similar material in the front yard. A minimum requirement of 65% of the front open space must be free of paved surfaces.

City boards and committees are now meeting in-person with a virtual option available to the public. Individuals who would like to attend meetings in person can access City Hall from the Martin Street entrance during normal business hours, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. For meetings that occur after hours, visitors can access City Hall through the Police Department lobby entrance on Pierce Street.
